Xi Emphasizes Sustainable Development as Vital Solution for Addressing Current Global Challenges

President Xi Jinping pointed out that solving today’s global issues hinges on sustainable development. He called it the “golden key.”

During a casual talk and lunch at the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, Xi mentioned how APEC has been making strides lately. They’ve been working on the Putrajaya Vision 2040 and going full throttle on the Bangkok Goals for a greener economy, which is good news for global sustainable growth.

“In the current scenario, we really need to agree more and take action to give a boost to global sustainable development,” he mentioned.

Xi suggested ramping up the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as a priority. “Let’s center our focus on development in the global agenda, making sure everyone sees its value and all nations join hands in cooperation,” he added.

China’s been active in proposing the Global Development Initiative (GDI), working to enhance cooperation among nations and tackle development gaps, Xi explained.

Secondly, he suggested carving out a fresh path toward green development. The idea is for countries to team up in transforming energy, industry, and transportation systems, promoting carbon and pollution reduction while fostering green growth. The goal is to ensure a balanced progress between the economy and the environment, creating quality jobs along the way.

Thirdly, Xi urged global collaboration in tackling climate change. He emphasized sticking to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, considering each country’s unique situation when setting climate targets, and addressing the needs of developing nations regarding finance, technology, and capacity building. The focus is on fully implementing the Paris Agreement and the convention.

Xi highlighted China’s commitment to its new development approach, driving comprehensive green and low-carbon changes in society and the economy. He emphasized their ongoing dedication to creating a harmonious relationship between humanity and nature.

China is set to ramp up its support for the green Belt and Road Initiative by strengthening partnerships in eco-friendly infrastructure, energy, and transportation. They’re determined to aid developing nations through a specialized fund geared toward climate change cooperation.

Xi stressed China’s unwavering commitment to global collaboration, aspiring to build a unified development community and foster a more environmentally responsible world. These discussions took place during a dialogue led by President Joe Biden, focusing on sustainability, climate priorities, and ensuring an equitable energy transition.
